Blythe and Adam are advocates for a local food system, for food security and resilience, and for the mental and physical health and vitality that comes with the growing of one’s own food. They embarked on their first market garden adventure in 2008. The patch was planted on the very same location that Blythe’s grandmother Iva’s vegetable garden had been planted many years before. They were quickly overwhelmed with how much their fertile patch was producing. It soon became apparent to them that the food they were growing needed a purpose. Drawing off Blythe’s upbringing and her experiences as a child pickling and preserving with her elders, they rolled up our sleeves and got to it. That marked the beginning of Spade & Spoon, and the first of many canning adventures together.
What makes Spade & Spoon different from most Ontario preserves is that they grow the majority of their own fruit and vegetables on their farm. This ensures that the ingredients are very local, very fresh and very tasty. The grower/maker arrangement ensures the freshest tastes while reviving the lost art of seasonal food preservation. They have a love of food and a love of farming, and their products are a testimony to this!
