Our Story

Supporting the Local Food System one crazy fresh produce basket at a time

Our Food

We've spent the last 12 years developing personal relationships with close to 60 local farmers and their families. These partnerships are built on respect and trust as we're determined to help them grow. We want to put more food dollars into local farms so they can continue to grow the most nutritious and delicious produce while preserving farmland and biodiversity around Toronto.

We believe the creation of a local food system, built on principles of sustainability and biodiversity, can be both financially sustainable for farmers and affordable for consumers.

We work with over 50 local artisans who share our same values of supporting local and organic farmers! We have been working with many of these shopss since we first opened and we have continued to add new ones every year who are the best at what they do in the city.

Many of our partners create products just for us and work with us to bring you new and exciting products every season!

We're always trying to build out the local food system and so last year we decided to build our own state of the art kitchen as a natural extension of our farm fresh products. (It was like grocery shopping when you're hungry, nothing was off limits). Mama's Kitchen started with a team of top-notch chefs and experts creating dishes from scratch each morning in the spirit of home cooking.

Our executive chef and team of food experts in Mama's Kitchen create seasonal salads, prepared meals, sides, soups and baked goods from scratch inspired by our local farms and seasons.

Our Community

By connecting you directly to local farmers, we provide you with access to the freshest, healthiest and most flavourful local organic produce at a fair price. We're so grateful for our amazing Mama Earth community, and our goal is to make our members happy with every single delivery.

We really value our people and try our best to make Mama Earth a great place to work. To us, this means paying fairly, treating people with kindness and respect and not taking ourselves too seriously. Our average wage is currently $20.30/hr (excluding management and salaried workers) and we scored 80% overall on our last staff engagement survey in January 2019 (compared to the Canadian average of 69%).

Alex & Heather
"The year was 2007. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. We began operations, working out of a garage, delivering to our neighbours once a week. For the first four to five years, our main focus was to develop and strengthen our relationships with local organic farmers and artisans. Since then, we've grown relatively quickly and we've also tried to double down on our fundamental values and principles (which are pretty much in line with the old style local food movements). Our members have allowed us to create something really nice for our community. We believe this is only the beginning of a much larger movement."

Our Impact

We do our best to always support the environment. Buying locally conserves energy, promotes biodiversity and protects open space. We're committed to working strictly with farmers who grow organically, in all senses of the word. We believe in growing produce the way nature intended - sustainably, and holistically, without the use of pesticides. We're so lucky to work with farmers who are always striving to improve produce quality and nutrition, soil health, and environmental diversity with each new growing season.

The diversity of produce has dropped 75% over the last 100 years; so we're really proud of our many farm partners who are committed to increasing the diversity of what they grow. This means more new, unusual and little-known heirloom varieties for you, and fewer mono-cropped industrial farm operations.

Increasing the diversity of the crops grown on a farm provides farmers with an added layer of security in this erratic climate era. It supports biodiversity, reduces pest pressures, and the risk of widespread plant diseases, so we can enjoy more of our favourites for many years to come!
