One of the first certified Organic aquaponic farms in Canada, these guys are cultivating fresh local greens in a closed loop system which significantly reduces the ecological footprint of conventional farming methods. Water consumption is reduced by 90% of that used in conventional farming, and because the plants are grown in a nutrient-rich, highly oxygenated water, they grow almost 50% faster than soil-grown plants. The “aqua” in aquaponics refers to the fish side of the equation. Natural bacterial cycles are utilized to convert fish waste to plant nutrients. Plants in turn, clean and filter the water that returns to the fish environment. Aqua Greens is located in Toronto near the Pearson Airport, and are certified Organic by Global Trust.
