The Early Years

Heather & Alex Billingsley started Mama Earth Organics in order to source organic produce directly from local farms.  The year was 2007.  It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

Our Goal:  The goal was (and still is) to provide a service where local farms are given priority and members are able to access the freshest organic items available at a fair price.

We’ve spent the past few years building a business and service that we love.  A service that makes the safest, most environmentally and ethically responsible decisions while still focusing on freshness and, most importantly, taste.  God forbid.

Also, a service that’s as convenient and as easy as possible for our members.

2007-2009

We began operations, working out of a garage, delivering to our neighbours once a week.

By July of 2007, with Heather about to give birth to her second child and the business taking up an increasing amount of time, we decided to pull the trigger.  Alex quit his job as a human rights lawyer to help out full time with Mama Earth and the kids.  Fortunately, things worked out and by late 2007 we moved into a larger space.

Throughout this time, we worked hard to develop and strengthen our relationships with local organic farmers and artisans.  By September of 2009, we were forced to move again, into a larger unit, to accommodate our growing customer base.  As we’ve grown, the many farmers that we work with have also been able to grow and benefit greatly.

What’s Going on Now

We now deliver to a bunch of people each day of the week.  (many of whom have been with us from our first week of operations!)

We’re obsessed with providing the best value and service to each customer.

We believe that running a socially and environmentally responsible business for the benefit of the community is not contradictory to running a successful business.

We passionately believe that supporting local farms and small scale local businesses  is the best way to improve Toronto’s food system.   Each year, our members allow us to divert more and more money away from mass produced items and allow us to put it back into the local economy.  Win-win for everyone.
